I am going to start with a few I know and then I am going to rely on you!!! If you want your favourite pub posted then E- Mail me.

We have all had the opportunity to tip the odd pint in a Country Pub but in todays climate a lot of these places are taking a bit of a hammering. I have decided to dedicate this page to them in recognition of the major part they have and still do play in our rural communities.

The Murumaru Tavern

I have chosen the Tavern to front this page because this is where I cashed my first ever shearing cheque. The Tavern is situated just north of Frasertown in northern Hawks Bay on the Wairoa-Tiniroto route to Gisborne. This is an old pcture of how I remember it but this building has burnt down. During the shearing season the place used to really hum because big Stations up the Ruakituri like Papuni, Waikatea, The Smiths, Cross Hills, Ruakituri Station, Spring Hill and a whole heap more had a shit load of sheep to shear and this was the Pub. There was a rumour going around when I was there that every shearing gang had to bring their own presser to the pub because by closing time, so many sheep had been shorn in the bar, nobody could get out the front door because of the piles of bloody wool???

The Weber Pub

This is a sketch of the Weber Hotel east of Dannevirke in Hawkes Bay.  I have put this one in because this is where I had to shout a couple of crates after shearing my first two hundred.

**(Book # 5)  Just thinking back gives me a headache!!

Hey Gene,
Just wanted to say that whilst researching Weber and surrounds for the first ever Weber Pub Quiz!! I came upon your site and was astonished to find a picture of the place.
Just had to write and say that my partner Merlin and I, originally from Wales, UK, have recently bought the pub at Weber and reopened it.
We still have a bit of work to do to complete the renovations, but when you're passing next, call in for a beer and we'd love to hear about your past experiences here, especially the one about the 'Story bloke who got himself into some strife with publican's wife'.
Thanks for the site - I have really enjoyed having a browse.

Hi Jo

Great to hear from you and I will take you up on your offer.

To everyone else out there the road is good, it aint too far and its worth a stop. See you there!!

THE WIMBLEDON

Emeline sent me the Wimbledon with this note.

The Wimbledon is not far from the Weber and is the type of pub everybody associates with what a country pub should look like.

Thanks Emeline

Whangaehu Pub

Was a sad day for me when I visited Wanganui recently. I just had to call in and see the old Whangaehu Pub.

The big flood certainly did its thing. The publican I recall there was Tom Quayle back in the eighties.

The last of my horse breaking bits were hanging on the walls and I always called in for a pint on my way through.
All gone now bar the memories.
